Changing Automatic Transmission Fluids on Outbacks

Greetings Fellow Readers,

Wondering about the process of changing Automatic Transmission Fluid in the Subaru Outback (2001, 02, 03 years). Our 02 has the external spin on filter. In talking to a couple shops - I'm getting different stories that don't match:

Story 1 - flush the system and change the external spin on filter. (they say it has the spin on ATF filter only)

Story 2 - drop the pan and change the filter on the INSIDE plus fluid change plus the spin on extedrnal filter (they say it has 2 filters - 1 inside and the other outside)

Story 3 - drop the pan - change the INSIDE filter and fluid - don't flush the system

With 35,000 miles on the odometer - its time to do something. Advice and opinions from other readers are desired.
