Pontiacs In The Park, 2005
Anyone here attend the annual Pontiacs In The Park at Virginia Motorsports Park last weekend? Over 300 cars in the race, 66 in the show, and a ton of swap meet stuff.
Highlight of the weekend was the John Welter Firebird setting the qickest ET in history for a "traditional" Pontiac V8. 6.82 @ 204. Door slammer, single turbo 440CID. ('99 Firebird body) Yup, MPH wasn't as high, but ET was lower than Arnie Beswick's championship F/C from '71, when he became the last non-Hemi to win an NHRA "fuel" championship. Many of our Chevy and Dodge customers attended, after my relentless badgering, to make sure they understand, a fast Pontiac is no fluke. There were several "door" cars in the 7s, and probably 25 in the 8s. Countless in the 9-12 range. One of "my" guys went 10.58 @ 127 in a 3,400 lb. Firebird, on 93 octane and a flat tappet cam. The rain came right before the quarter finals for the sportsman bracket. Of 73 entries, there were five of ours. With seven cars left, four of them were still ours! And one of them had aleady "won" the draw for the by-run. MANY wheel-standers, too. The Chevy and Dodge boys came away with respect. One of them said to me: "You've been telling me for years, how strong they can run. I never believed it until today. Those guys GET BUSY!" Now all we need to do is get a bunch of you ex-Pontiac racers to pluck those big block Chevys and stab a new Injun... We got parts and technology. The rest of 'em? Better keep an eye on their hair... Scalpers are coming, and they're NOT selling tickets. |
