86 gti
I just recently got an 86 gti for 1,500 (Woot!), but it's obviously been a little neglected. I had just put on a new alternator belt, as the old one was squeaking and after i got it on I started it up to drive somewhere, and it died on me. The car idles fine, but when i put it in gear it dies. I'm new to the boards, but have been reading them for some time, and i'd appreciate any help you can give.

Oh, btw, it's a manual 16v, and the only mod is an obnoxious muffler : ) I've never had a volkswagen before, but i have worked on several cars.

Re: 86 gti
You can remove the air boot between air flow plate & throttle valve & clean it all out thoroughly with throttle body cleaner. There is also a 1"x5" silver cylindrical idle stabilizer valve near the valve cover that can be cleaned out. It has two large vacuum hoses and a two-pin electrical connector.
