Supercharger going bad (no whine)

Hello again,
Recently I was driving my car through town and noticed supercharger whine during softer acceleration, (something I never really heard or noticed before). I heard the sound when I drove a 2004 GTP and was surprised to see mine didn't have the whining. At this time the car had a lot of power (like it should). The car drives fine but a lot of times it seems to be slower than other times especially when the whining goes away. I also noticed to day that my supercharger nose ( the long part where the pulley is) was sooo hot I couldn't touch it for more than a couple seconds. I can't imagine this is normal. Also I still have the knocking from the engine bay and am wondering if a bad coupler can cause a loss in performance or not. Sorry about the length but I wanted to be specific, also my car is a 1997 GTP at 40,000. Thank you to everybody for the help.
Also my idle is rough, the RPM's don't move much but the car bounces inside quite a bit from it.

Re: Supercharger going bad (no whine)

If the coupler is going bad and is bad enough to cause a knocking or rock tumbler sound then that could be picked up by the knock sensors and thus pulling timing.

If the car is bouncing inside and the rpms are ok then I would check the motor mounts.

Re: Supercharger going bad (no whine)

To check your motor mounts have someone touque brake the car while you stand (safely) in front. Watch to see if the engine drops excessively under a load. Lower mount is not a do-it-yourself job but the upper mounts are about an hour job. I had my mechanic replace my lower mount ($150) and I replaced my upper mounts with MSP polys. Haven't had any problems since and noticed a significant increase in torque since more was going to the wheels instead of twisting the engine.

Thank you very much for the help, as far as torque braking what would be proper procedure (RPM'S and how long). Thanks.

Re: Supercharger going bad (no whine)

Short bursts up to 3000/3500 RPM should be sufficient to see any engine movement. Some movement is normal but if the engine drops significantly, you may have failing mounts.

The mounts look like they may be bad. Also again today the nose of the supercharger was extremely hot and so were the diagnol braces, and everthing else. My coolant also is a bit sludgy, (green with orange don't mix) and the engine at idle made a harsh grinding sound, looks like I may have to go to the dealer. Also today on the highway my car was extremely slow, especially with the performance shift on, when I turned it off the car was noticably faster. This is not good news.

Re: Supercharger going bad (no whine)

If you've mixed green antifreeze with Dexcool, you need to have a full system flush and probably should change the thermostat as well. The nosedrive of the supercharger is going to get hot. Have you ever checked the supercharger oil fluid level or changed the oil? No idea why you would be seeing performance difference in performance shift.

I'll check the oil today and figure out a way to change it myself (any tips). Also the performance shift thing makes no sense to me either. It shouldn't have anything to do with the motor. Hope the dealer can figure it out. Thanks.

See http://www.clubgp.com/cgi-asp/mods.asp?modid=13 for details on how to change s/c oil. Easy job. Just don't get any on your hands!
