Hi mileage and climbing

Hey again, I appreciate everybody's input on my last problem. Thanks a bunch.

Now I'm curious about something.. I'm putting a LOT of miles on this car.. 95 Camaro 3.4L V6. Every weekend alone is 800+ miles and it already has 154,000 on it. So, with that said, is there any preventative maintenance precautions I can take to help it along aside from oil changes and injector cleaner every other week? Anything to look for down the road?

Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Hi mileage and climbing

When's the last time you did a full tuneup? What kind of oil are you running? What trans?

ease up on the two week injector cleaner stuff. they don't get that dirty. Think about it. gasonline is a solvent so... Injectors will self clean to a point. You only have to do the injector stuff once a year if you think you have to do it. Personaly I don't even bother with it. It's no big deal to pull injectors and clean them myself. That way I know they are good to go.

Re: Hi mileage and climbing

Castrol GTX hi mileage 10W30, automatic trans, had a "tune-up" about 2 months ago, but how do I know if it was a "Full" tune-up or not?

Now, roger that on the injector cleaner... is pulling and cleaning yourself something a newb can do? If so, how would I go about doing that?

Re: Hi mileage and climbing

If you drive the car a lot cleaning the injectors isn't something that will need to be done very often. If the car sits for a while and isn't run say if you store it over winters then cleaning the injectors is more important otherwise there's no need. As far as high milage goes keep the oil and coolant clean and full don't beat on it too often and do a check of the engine compartment once a month or so and it should last a long time.

Oh, and it's not a big deal but our engines call for 5w-30, but 10 isn't that much different.

Re: Hi mileage and climbing

5W30. Roger that... what's the difference?
And, what am I looking for when I check the engine compartment?
If I sound like a rookie, I am. Only been working on cars since I bought this one in January.

Re: Hi mileage and climbing

The difference between them is their viscosity or thickness/weight, 5-30 is a little bit thinner than 10-30. I can't remember exactly what the numbers mean, one is the winter (cold) weight and the other is the summer (warm) weight. I think the 5 and the 10 are the summer, not entirely sure.

Re: Hi mileage and climbing

Alright... I'm probably doing an oil change either this weekend or next, so I'll put in the 5W30 this time. Thanks!

5 is the oil weight (or viscosity) for 0 degrees F and 30 is the oil weight for 210 degrees F. They determine those numbers by heating it (or cooling) to the specific number, then poor it from a certain size hole. The amount of time it takes for the oil to run through determines the number.

I would stick with 10w30 if I was you. For higher mileage engines, the 10w30 will last longer and won't burn as fast. Its thicker so it won't seep up as easy...5w30's mainly for newer engines.
