Reliability?
Hey everyone,
I currently own a 94 Cutlass Supreme SL with the 3.4L DOHC engine. And if you search for my name, you'll notice that Ive had a fair bit of trouble with this car. The general opinion seems to be that it's the most unreliabile car ever made. Anyhow, I can't drive a car thats gutless, so one of the ones ive been looking at is the Grand Prix. Either with a 3.8 or 3.8 Supercharged; both seem to have reasonable amounts of power. *I don need THAT much HP* The question is, do you feel that the cars are generally reliable? I know there will always be some which need work, but it seems that there isnt a single cutlass supreme out ther that doesn't need work. Thanks for the input. |

If you have time to read the past threads on this form you'll find every thing that can go wrong on a car. But, most run trouble free or close to it. And beside, they are good looking.

Re: Reliability?
I have trouble answering threads like this because i think the definition of what is "fast" or "quick" verys greatly for many people. Me myself, i consider a 3.8 Grand Prix GT to be normal, calling this car fast or quick to me is just funny. The GTP is what i would call peppy or quick, but not a FAST! car. Corvettes, vipers, etc etc are fast cars.... Like i said, all depends on the person.... but just FYI, the GTP smokes the GT and they are not comparable

Re: Reliability?
I've owned three of these cars, a '94 SE, a '97 GTP, and a '99 GTP. The only really major problem I've had out of any of them was when the transmission in my '99 decided to lose 4th gear and had to be rebuilt. The only other thing was the rack & pinion in the '97 but that was a recall. The 3.8 V6 is one of the better engines that GM has made. Taken care of, they're usually in for the long haul. There's always exceptions to every rule, though. Most people who drive these cars end up loving them (just look around on this forum).
As for being fast, no, they're not sports cars. It won't hold a candle to something like a Viper or a 'Vette, but when it comes to V6 Camaros, Firebirds, and Mustangs, and all those little 4-cylinder rice rockets running around, the GTP will eat 'em for lunch in most cases

Oh, I think John Force's car is fast.

My 04 has been very reliable. Other than the wheel bearing I broke, nothing has had to be replaced. I have had my car less than a year and I have about 14K miles.

Re: Reliability?
My 99 GTP has been a good car. Some common problems include intake gaskets (GM design flaw); rear main oil seal & fuel pump resistor are common problems. I also had problems with my upper/lower motor mounts failing.
