Port installed keyless entry progamming

I have a port installed keyless entry system on my 2002 Sequoia. I have called some dealers and they told me to try turning the ign. switch on and off 7 times, then pressing lock on the remote to add it to the car's memory. It is not working, does anyone have any tips or detailed instructions. Thanks
