up when turned down
General question before I try to fix.
98 GP GTP radio volumn control on the stereo its self goes up very fast when turned down. i have never noticed before because I only use the steering wheel controls. But I was suppose to trade with another member so I check and it is really screwed up. Can this be fixed or is it better to get a new one? Any insight would be great. |

Re: up when turned down
I've had four Pontiacs with the steering wheel controls, and they all four did that. My dad told me once that it had something to do with the way the steering wheel controls were wired in. Mine goes up when you turn it up, goes up when you turn it down. I just stick to steering wheel controls and don't even use that knob. I don't know that it CAN be fixed.

Re: up when turned down
Actually guys I fixed mine just last week. My POS tape deck was doing the same exact thing...only I didnt have the steering wheel controls. The only thing I had to try was my trusty can of contact cleaner. (thats what it says on the can) I removed the radio, and while moving those little tabs I puled the guts out thru the front. The potentiometer that controls the volume is pretty damn small but it does has one tiny hole in the very center ont he back of it. I squirted just a tiny-ass amount into that hole, worked the knob back and forth and around and around. Put the radio back together shoved in back into my baby and when it worked I almost shyt myself. Been working for over a week now.

Hum..I have the same problem with my '98 GP GT. So I just don't use the radio knob. I only use the controls on the steering wheel which are really handy and I really like them. BTW, one of the lights is out on the steering wheel now, ugh.

Mine started to do that. But I don't use radio controlls too much. Never happens on wheel controls. Buy a new radio. It's the vol. pod in radio. Their a pain to replace.

Re: up when turned down
You dont actualy have to replace the knob...or at least I didnt. The Contact Cleaner...electrical section of Lowes or Home Depot should take care of it. Of course I would recommend taking the radio apart but that is'nt too hard. Just a couple of real quick squirts and then spin it's head off. Min'e still working just fine.
