'73 Fire out of Carb, White Smoke

This is my dream car, and my first car. I bought it not that long ago. The previous owner had it sitting for a long time with little-to-no gas in it. It ran fine for me a bit, but one day I started it up for my friends and it stalled. I started it back up and fire shot up out of the Carb. (Luckally I didn't have an air cleaner on it and the hood was open) There was a tonne of white smoke barreling out of the exhaust pipe(s). (not sure if one or both) The car has never put out white smoke. I shut it off and talked to my Mechanics teacher, he gave me a list of what could be wrong, and said I should start it again. I filled up a jerry can and put $5 of gas in the car.(Unleaded) When I started it agian, there was no flame and the exhaust was back to normal.

What could be wrong, and how much would it cost?
This car uses Unleaded right?

Thank you very much.

Matt

flames +smoking

Not exactly sure without the car but here goes . White smoke usually means water/ antifreeze. Some will tell you that it is transmission oil, but they are wrong on dodges. GM vehicles have a vacum modulator that when bad will suck trans oil into the engine, dodges shift by linkage. You can have engine oil past broken rings but this will not cure itself. Broken rings would only get worse. The flames issue could be nothing more than timing advanced a little to far. Carberator engines will some times back fire. Here is a trick my dad taught me when an engine back fires crank the engine immediately this will suck the flames into the engine[where they belong] and sometimes the engine will even start. The smoke could be from the back fire, but check your fluid levels. good luck ps keep that car unless you sell it to me at a bargain. LOL

flames out of the carb mean your timing is too far advance.
