Celica or Corolla?

I've always been a huge fan of the Celica, my friend got me hooked when he let me drive his old 89 GT, 150K miles on it and it would still lay rubber and go 117+ mph. I really want a 2000 or newer GTS but there's a few major disadvantages:
#1 I'd get raped by the car insurance company (probably $150 or more per MONTH)
#2 I have a young kid, it's not fun getting his seat in & out of a backseat in a 2 door
#3 I read a lot about the blind spots caused by the roofline
#4 some people claim that local mechanics don't want to work on VVT engines and the nearest Toyota dealer is 100 miles away from me

So I'm starting to consider the Corolla, which one has the VVT, is it the S model? Does anyone know if it compares to the Celica (handling, acceleration, etc)? Maybe if I put some work into it I could squeeze a few more horses out of it.... I'll probably get a Celica anyways =)

The Celica is going away,as the Echo,as the Spider and I heard the Corolla. The Celica Auto is the best, the Cables on the 5&6 speed brake from there design and a bitc* to replace, been there done that. Celica=Power, Corolla=????

Ok the answer you seek is the corolla xrs, it has the same 1.8l vvti-l 170hp, (Its the same engine not sure why its rated for less power) engine with a 6spd manual transmission as the newer celica gts. This engine is also found in the new lotus elise. It is a 4 door which solves the problem with the kid. It is priced cheaper than the celica gts for about 18k versuse23k. Unfortuantly for the celica its last production year is this year. This leaves the mr2 spyder the last true sports car in the toyota family.

Why has toyota killed its high perfomance cars. I guess they feel they have no more need to be in the market any more.

I work at a lexus toyota dealer. If you want a reliable car that is still relativley fast and comfortable then corolla is the way to go. Never buy and echo and dont tell my boss i told you that. I own a celica and they are very very good cars however i will end up payin quite some change for repairs further down the road

All the new Celica's and Corolla's utilize VVT (variable valve timing). I think what you meant to say is VVTL-i (Variable Valve Timing with Lift and Intelligence). Only the Celica GT-S and the Corolla XRS have VVTL-i (both have the 2zz-ge engine.. all other Celica and Corolla models have the 1zz-fe).

Straight line acceleration, the Celica is a bit quicker. The fastest time recorded completely stock (full interior and all) at newcelica.org is 14.6. I got a 14.7 in mine completely stock. The fastest stock time I've seen posted by a Corolla XRS owner was 15.2 I think.

Handling.. the Celica is obviously superior. The Celica has excellent handling and braking abilities.
