Windshield wiper problem 1994 Silvarado

Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I've heard of other people having this problem. How does a guy fix it?

Re: Windshield wiper problem 1994 Silvarado

I had to replace the wiper motor on mine. It was $60.

Re: Windshield wiper problem 1994 Silvarado

There was a safety recall on the wiper motor . I think that your '94 is in the group. CAll the dealer and give your vin. Should be a free replacement. I dont remember if they replace the whole motor assy, or just the board. The problem is the solder joints on the wiper motor board crack and come apart from the board. I had that same problem with mine but my truck is a '92 and it was not covered. So i took the board out, resoldered the joints and it works fine now.

If you can buy a new motor for $60, then by all means. However, your problem may be as simple as the circuit board that is attached to your wiper motor. These are replaceable and are less expensive. You might even be able to fix it yourself. Over time the solder joints can break where the connector meets the board.

just started having prob. myself after seeing these discussions
for so long. A couple days ago during rain, the wipers stopped
in up position. Kind of scary when you're with your kid and you
can't see the road. Also noticed my mist doesn't work now.
I've seen some detailed instructions on this seemingly easy job.
I going to give it a shot after work today. (resoldering circuit card)

it is not hard... pull the black cover off, the board pulls out. you will be able to see the bad solder joints.(usually a small black crack in the solder) It is ussually just the main solder joints were the wiring harness plug is.

Had a coworker experience the same in his '98 Silverado. We took the board out, and noticed a crack in one of the solder joints. The board also has two contact "brushes" that run along the rotating part of the motor. There was alot of grease build up on the parts, so he cleaned that off, soldered the suspect joint, and "lightly" pushed the brushes out for a better contact. He hasn't had a problem since. The brass contacts on the brushes were worn unevenly, with one worn down a fair bit, which, in time is going to require a new board, unless you can fabricate something in it's place. An electrical contact cleaner sprayed over the board should take the greasey residue off.

Re: Windshield wiper problem 1994 Silvarado

My trucks had the intermitant wiper problem and all it ended up being was a bad ground. To check for this take a screw driver and touch it to the wiper motor case and the other to a nearby bolt and then turn the wipers on. Mine was fixed with a 6" piece of wire.

I laid some new solder down. I guess I'll just have to wait to see if it's fixed.
I'll keep the ground wire issue in mind. I did see those 2 contacts and
wiped them off a bit but there was so much grease around, I assumed
they must need or be OK with it. The first thing I noticed was a reddish
shallac type stuff covering about half the card looking like a leak or
something that didn't belong.
