My wife just got a 96 GA,2.4 Automatic. On the gear shift theres a botten on the side of the knob ,Is that to turn off the overdrive ?

The button to shift it out of park? if there's another button on the gear shift it's for the overdrive

that button turns off traction control, if you press it then look at the lower left of your instrument panel youll see ETS off light come on. Meaning traction control off.

Justis's correct that is to activate and deactivate the traction control. Let us know if you need more info on the ETS system. we're here to help.

Like I said A VERY WISE MAN ! but he is right so do not be afraid to ask any questions, it is the only way to learn about your GA and most of us would rather answer a question and try to help, rather than try to help with an issue that could have started as a simple question but has now become a major issue.

I`ll be, it has ETS system.Should my wife drive with it on or off for summer driving ?

doesnt really make a diference, i for one hate it. Alls it does is decrease engine power if it feels the wheels slip. Which sometimes during the winter you need to spin the tires a bit to get going. In my 96 i just leave it off.

My g/f has the ETS, and honestly, she never turns it on, even in our nasty MI winters, and the car does fine. However, I did toss on good M/S's all around for the winter, so that could be why we never needed the ETS.

The ETS is a non-factor in normal driving, the system does not activate until the wheel sensors detect wheel spin. It works via the Anti-lock brakes, when a wheel begins to spin the sensor tells the computer to activate the ABS which then applies the brake to the wheel that is spinning, the short bursts of brake stops the wheel from spinning thus allowing the wheel to grab so you can get the traction needed.
Since the system is only active when called upon it does not matter is you leave it on all of the time, it has no effect on performance or fuel economy.
My wife had a 93 GA with the ETS and I had her leave it on all of the time for those instances of heavy rain at times when pulling out of an intersection the system would activate allowing her to have control on a quick pull-out. The choice is all yours but for a little peace of mind for your wife's sake you may want her to have it available when needed. That's my two cents worth.
