98 GL Remote Programming Problems

My remote stopped working so I assumed the batteries were dead. Replaced them and tried to reprogram but the car will not go into reprogram mode (key in ignition-on, key in door) I don't get the 3 beeps. Wiring in the door harness looks good. What next? What is a good way to check the switches, and is there any way to actually check the module?

I can lock/unlock everything but the drivers door from the dashboard, but the key in the drivers door does nothing but the drivers door. Is there some sort of sensor in there?
