Switching to synthetic

I am about to switch to a synthetic motor oil in my 5.3L '02 with 28,000 miles on it. I've read a couple of places that when switching from a conventional oil to a synthetic one, you should use a can of motor flush in it to get all the old build up out. Is this true?

Re: Switching to synthetic

Stay away from motor flushes. The engine shouldn't be dirty at that mileage, and in a really dirty engine a flush could loosen a bunch of gunk all at once and do more harm than good.

Some people notice a cleaning effect with synthetics. If the oil seems to get dark fast, you might run a short change interval with your first batch, say 3000 or so.

What oil are you considering? The real synthetics are Mobil 1, Red Line, Royal Purple, German made Castrol 0W-30, and Amsoil. Most of the others are just highly refined dino.

Re: Switching to synthetic

I think I'm gonna go with Royal Purple. I'll also be using it in my wife's civic which has 62,000 miles on it. Anything special I should do there?

And I already read most of the pertinent info in the oil bible, but thanks

Re: Switching to synthetic

I bought a used '91 sportside with 60K and a wrist pin knock. Changed to Mobil 1 and the truck never had any work done until it was totaled at 300K. No special flush, just 10K miles on oil changes.
