Is there no way to pull codes for yourself?

There isn't a blinking light or anything that we can look at ourselves? No matter what we have to take it somewhere for the service engine light?

how often does it come on? in the last 4 years, i have only needed to pull one code ( well two, but the second was a minor code that didn't even set the light, i found it playing around with a scantool)
