I am swapping Trannies on my Tempo... Need help!!!

 Hi everybody! I have two Tempo's... a 1988 that has a front wheel drive tranny and a 1990 with an all wheel drive tranny. the 1990 has a tranny that is about toast... the 1988 FWD has a good tranny... I was wondering if it was possible to put the FWD tranny in the car that has AWD and just disconnect the driveline from the rear tires? Im unsure and need to know ASAP!
