My car and its rust
Im new here, seems like a great place for information so I was wonder what you guys think the best way to get rid of my rust is.
These are some pics of my car, its a old fire chief car (so the paint came with it, but i like it) I got it practically rust free but ruined it with some western NY winters, any comments that you guys have are greatly appreciated. Most of the rust is behind the back wheel well ![]() ![]() ![]() any thoughts? Last edited by LeafsBlow29; 04-17-2005 at 01:39 PM. |

Re: My car and its rust
Bondo only works if you sandblast the hell out of the body first. You need to get behind the body too. That looks like where the rust has formed and is what caused the holes to appear. Once you get behind the body, and clear out all the rust there, go ahead and fill it in w/ bondo. After that dries, sand it, and prime it. Do a second coat of primer as well after sanding the first. Then paint it. Do a few coats, with sanding inbetween. The do 1 or 2 coats of clear paint. Wet sand it, polish it, and wax if you want. Then after you do all of this, go behind the body again. Be sure its clear of any moisture and dirt. You don't have to paint or prime it, but take some grease (all purpose grease as thick as you can get) and smear it all along the inside of the body where the rust was, and up a little further. Be sure to cover it really well, don't worry about being neat, and you can never use too much. (Use a whole tub if ya want.) This should stop the rust dead in its tracks. During this whole procedure, KEEP THE CAR OUT OF THE RAIN AND MOISTURE. Otherwise you could trap water in there, and it'll eat even more away at your body.
