Muffler

Hi everyone, i hope someone can help me out with my situation, or give me a little piece of mind.

i recently noticed that when i start my 2002 taurus ses, that the exhaust vibrates and tail pipe shakes. I took my car to the local ford dealership service center, they took a look at it, and found out that the muffler is loose internally, how can that happen? of course the repair isnt covered under my extended warranty. does this repair need fixed immediately, will it further damage my car or can it wait a month or so? thanks for the help.

Re: Muffler

it shouldn't further damage your car, take the car to an independent exhaust shop and they should be able to fix it just by fixing a hanger. Independent shops can do alot more with exhaust work than dealerships can.

Re: Muffler

It sounds like the spot welds broke loose due to vibration or corosion. An independent muffler shop should be able to replace your muffler at a much lower cost than the dealer. Not fixing it can lead to a clogged exhaust system and a car that won't start.

Fortunately, as car repairs go, this one should be relatively inexpensive.

Re: Muffler

I would go for a independant for sure. They always have worked best for me. I had this happen with my Sable that I used to have. It should be pretty inexpensive.

update to muffler problem

i took my car to 4 different places. first 2 said that baffles were loose. an idependent muffler shop told me that there was nothing wrong with my muffler, and that there was nothing wrong with my car, just a possible hanger making the noise. i took it to a fourth shop and they told me its the catalytic converter. now i dont know who to believe. im all stressed out.

Re: Muffler

don't take it to the last shop, threre's nothing wrong with your cat if you're not throwing a code. I would take it to one of the first 2, they seem to know what they're doing.
