Every Monday morning I head to the local hospital here (University of Wisconsin) to drop off supplies and pick up some samples (I'm a Clinical Project Manager). It is a 5 minute job and I always park in the patient drop off zone. It is a very nice sunny day in Wisconsin so I have both of my sunroof open (I have the OEM hard top), and when I park there I always park half of the truck up on the curb (a little urban offroading).
Well, after my drop off I was walking back to the truck and there was a guy checking out my truck. I walk over to him and he asks, "Is this yours?" I reply, "Yes it is." Him, "What year is it". Me "A 2000". Him, "wow! it is sweet!". Anyways we get to taking and he has a 1998 Trooper and at about 100k on his truck he had the rod knock which lead him to have to spend $6000.00 to have it replace the engine. I asked him about his oil usage, and he said he was using about 2qts every 1k. So I told him the 3 things that you need to keep clean (EGR, PVC and the rings via Sea Foam). I also told him to do an Internet search for Isuzu FAQ and he would find a great website full of tips. And he also asked me about how to check the transmission fluid level (GM SUCKS!) He said he loves his truck and wants to keep it a long time. Nice to talk to someone who has a passion for their truck, but still kinda sad to hear about another 3.5 Trooper engine biting the dust.

Good of you to pass the word! I enjoy a chance to run into a rodeo/passport/trooper owner in a chance meeting in a parking lot or some such, and passing the word. I realize quickly and often many were like me, changed the oil and go on with life. I now know better, but I realize many of the people I come across are not car people. It's a good chance to give some friendly advice that could save them an engine.
Kudos to the Rodeo Forum! I now believe the '99 Rodeo will last me 15 years plus with the average miles I do yearly. I'm currently at 5.5 years and 62K miles, no problems, runs like a dream.

It's really cool when someone's had a bad engine experience (i.e. 3.5L) and they still like the vehicle.
I've run into quite a few Isuzu owners in this state, most of them you can talk to and they enjoy their vehicle, others - well, they seem so busy, it doesn't feel wise to even say hi.
