99 Grand Cherokee Cooling Fan

The cooling fan on my 99 GC laredo will not kick on. I have tested the fan and it will turn on when connected directly to battery. A fuse was blown number 26 on under dash fuse panel. Changed out but to no avail. I have heard the relay goes bad. I have a haynes manual but can't tell from the drawing where the relay is located. Please help.

The switch is mounted behind the passenger side headlight above the vacuum reservoir.
Careful removing the trim screws I snapped one, after several years they get pretty corroded

Where

I looked behind the headlight but couldn't tell where the relay was. Is it a case or what? Under the battery there is what I think to be the vacuum resevoir but it is small and I wonder if the relay is inside that case. Anyother ideas would help.

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee Cooling Fan

Been there done that. You don't have to take the front end off like they tell you in the Hanyes manual. A dealer parts guy told me this and it took 20 minutes. Take off the right headlight assembly. You have to kinda find the relay by peeping around and then you drill a 2 inch hole through the plastic under the headlight assem, right over the relay. A little finger and wrench work and you can change it

I have taken the headlight off twice now but I wasn't looking under it. I will tonight and hopefully it will work. Thanks.

Trust me its there, the tricky part for me was to make sure that the hole came out right on top of the relay. I ended up being off about a half inch but it was close enough. Afterward I was too neurotic about leaving the hole open and I put Duct tape over it. If you are too far off you can use a dremel tool to cut expand the hole.
Good luck,
