Hello, I am new here. Now that's that's over, heres my problem.
I have a 1985 Toyota trecel, carburetor, automatic, with AC. 200,000 miles. When I got it it would idle rough with a loud banging coming from somewhere in the engine. The car didn't have enough power to remain in drive at an idle. THe banging seems to go away at high revs. also, it does not blow smoke. I have already changed the points, plugs, oil, filters, cap, rotor, and have rebuilt the carburetor. can someone point me in the right direction for a fix? Thank you! |

sounds like you have a rod knocking ... that's bad. i'd be looking for another engine.

a rod is the "rod" that connects the piston to the journal on the crank that rotates... what happens, especially in older poorly maintained engines, is that the oil goes to shit, and the bearings get trashed, and wear out... creating clearance that's not suppose to be there. when the piston is creating power, then returning back to the top of its stroke, there's a breakover point, and that's where the slack shows up... creating a "knocking" sound.
i have a 90 tercel and mine did the same thing when i got it ... i put another engine in it, and tore apart the old one... the bearings were burnt, and mangled... the knocking may not always be there, but if it does it, your engine is not long for this world. i simply do not see any other way your engine could be creating this "knocking" noise... just my $.02 |
