91 park ave 112,000 miles...couple problems

hey all...i thank ne one in advance if they can assist me in any way....i have a 91 park ave with 112,000 miles and i have two major problems i would like to get fixed...one of them is every once in a while my car will not start...like every month or so it just doesnt wanna start...it will crank fine...then it starts for like 1 split second then it just dies...i have taken it to a mechanic and they said they cannot help me unless the problem is actually happening...the onlything is if u let it sit for like 2-3 minutes it starts up no problem....and runs perfect for a month or so...one thing ive always thought it could be is the vat key reader...does anyone think it is possbile that the reader malfunctions and doesnt read the key properly?...ne other suggestions? i really am not good with cars but i know a little...secondly...my headlights most of the time will not come on...when they do come on they stay on for a while then shut off then come back on...the cuircuit breaker gets RED HOT i realize it has to be a short somewhere ... but i really have no idea where too look...does anyone else have this problem or know of a way to remedy it..i would like any suggestions at all thank you again

only guessing here, i'd try cleaning the key from the outside, where that resistor is, heard that if they get dirty they won't work well, ...

I had the same key problem, only when it is raining or humid. I let it set for 3 minutes, then try again, and it always cranks. If you try to crank it before the 3 minutes are up, it resets the timer. It could be a dirty key, so it would be a good idea to clean it with alcohol.

might be the crank position sensor located behind the crank pully. check plug by unplugging and cleaning, if no help sensor might be going bad. do you get a spark when it won;t start? If no spark I;ll bet it;s the cps

Shot in the dark, but maybe your two problems are related, liek the light problem is straining your battery and or charging system?
