I have the same exact problem with my 88, I have been told it could be a wire that ate itself, have you resolved this yet?? Please contact me ASAP!

If your car is a manual trans and you can jump start off of the starter salanoid and it turns over but it wont with the key. Then what you might want to look at is the clutch safty switch. You have to have the clutch pushed all the way in to start it with the key, but you bypass that saftey switch if you are jumping it off of the salanoid. Now, if it's an automatic, then the park/neutral switch might be bad or your shift linkage might be off not alowing the car to start by the key. Hope that helps.....Just thought I'd put my two sence in!
good luck |

Re: 82 mustang ignition
Hey what's up, I already got this problem resolved, it was the ignition switch, it did eat itself. Since then I have sold that car and got a freaking sweet '86 T-Top Mustang GT 5.0 Powa!
