HOK Paints

I just discovered my local hobby shop, One of the worlds biggest hobbyshop Serves up House of Kolor paints for 4 buks a jar.
(Picture I like to brag)

Yes 3 Rows of 1:10 - 1:48 scale plastic rows.

Anyways, What kinda of paint is HOK? Will Alchool thin it? What kinda of thinner? And Primer?

Heres a site if any of you Socal residents are interested in visiting this great place.

Re: HOK Paints

I love that place, they were a little closer to me when they were in Whittier but it's still worth the drive. House of Kolor paints are lacquer or urethane and should be thinned with lacquer thinner or urethane reducer. I use a lot of HOK paints, they have great colors and are easy to work with. All their pearl colors can be mixed with each other to make your own colors.

Re: HOK Paints

HoK comes in a variety of paint types, urethanes lacquers, epoxies, etc.

HoK shimrin bases are a urethane. However, they can be topcoated with either an Acrylic Lacquer, or an Acrylic Enamel. But once you pick the type of topcoat you need to stick with that type for the rest of the paint job.

The shimrin bases also require a primer/sealer. The Primer is an epoxy primer, KP-21. The sealer isnt as neccesary for a model. Make sure the ground coat is the same color all the way through.

HoK paints each require a specific reducer, these arent like regular model paints where you can just thin lacquers with lacquer thinner. HoK needs to be properly reduced. You need RU-300 Urethane reducer, and most of the HoK paint use this reducer, Shimrin's, Kandy's, and Clears.

The Shimrin bases are just one of the many many many varieties of paint in HoK's line up. Each one may require a different reducer, different ground coat, and different top coat.

The Shimrin bases sometimes dry dull depending on the type of Shimrin base. The Graphic art bases dry dull and require a clear coat either Acrylic Lacquer, or Acrylic Enamel.

I could go into details, for each type, and each ground coat, and each top coat needed. But I would be here all day and night. Automotive paints like HoK are tricky stuff, and require some knowledge of how they work to get the right finish. However, I'm talking from an automotive paint view. Others may have different techniques for models, Im just saying how it works for real cars.

Also, definately, absolutely where a respirator when using urethanes, acrylic lacquers, and acrylic enamels. Also check your EPA laws about spraying outside because paints like they are definately not environmentally friendly and California's EPA is very strict about painting.

Hope that gives you some insight.
