aftermarket radio install in a 96 Grand Am se?

My factory radio in my 96 grand am is only a cassette player I want to put an aftermarket cd player in it, the factory radio is the delco anti theft model, would I have any problems putting a new pioneer or sony unit in it?

No, you can put any type of aftermarket stereo you want, You will just need a install kit for different size units. Good Luck and let us know what you end up getting.

yep as FormulaLT1 states no problems, i have a pioneer deck in my 96 se and it works fine. no problems

No worries, the anti-theft only kills the radio internally, GM's brilliant idea to deter someone ripping them out of the dash. They forgot that it not too hard to get the code to re-activate it, so it was a dumb idea anyway, lol.

You'll be fine, ya just want to check the back of your original radio, and it shows the connections for the factory plugs, such as LF speaker +, RR speaker+, etc, etc, makes it a lot easier to tap new unit to exist wiring if ya can't find a adapter harness.

As Knife says, get the adapter harness to connect to the factory wiring that way you dont hace to cut the factory wires and can reinstall the factory unit if you get rid of the car. They also make adapter plates to cover the large hole that the factory unit is in that way you can buy any size unit you want and it can be made to fit in the hole and it doesn't look too bad. I had a pioneer unit in my 96 GAGT

The theft lock is on the radio only. does not interfear with the wiring at all.

J.C. Whitney is one source for adapter harnesses and cover plates [trim to fit], so is Radio Shack.

Thanks guys for the info, I am going to go looking for a new radio in a couple of weeks, I had a 98 sonoma before and it was a piece of cake to replace the factory radio. I will let you know how it turns out.
