1997 Lumina

1997 Lumina with cruise control. I am having problems with my turn signal switch and need to pull the steering wheel. Can anyone give me some hints on doing this job? Thanks,
kaprice

Re: 1997 Lumina

I replaced one of these about a year ago in a 96 Lumina. I had a Haynes manual and followed it exactly. It was pretty easy, just need to be extra careful disconnnecting the airbag and resetting the airbag switch if necessary. The only special tool I needed was a steering wheel puller.

air bags can be deadly, failure to follow instructions could result in severe injury or death, so don't take the job lightly. If you follow the proceedures exactly, you'll have no problems. Skip a step and you could kill yourself.

Re: 1997 Lumina

Be especially aware of static discharge, which can fire the airbag, don't slide the airbag module around on the seat or whatever while it's off.

...empty gun rack.

I have removed tens of air bags from cars that we burn at our Fire Training Center. There is nothiing to be overly concerned about, just disconnect the battery, before hand, and with GM products, just be aware of the locking clip (usually a small yellow clip)needs to be removed first, on the plug from the air bag to the steering column.
When you store the air bad make sure you put it down the same way it is installed in the car. With some testing, we had found that an upside down air bag (one that has the bag facing the ground) can litterly go nearly 25 ft in the air when detonated.
