Timing Dilemma 93 Shadow
hey guys. i have recently purchased a 93 dodge shadow for $75. the reason is because the heads need redone, so i took the deal. anyway, i set the timing marks up to set #1 piston at TDC before i removed everything to get to heads. got heads off and discovered that #1 piston is NOT at TDC, despite the marks being lined up on the belt/cover. does this mean that ignition and all else will be out of time? if so, i have no clue as how to put it together to wear it will run properly. any ideas???

Re: Timing Dilemma 93 Shadow
Engine type? In removing the head, was the timing belt removed?
If so, then you needed to mark the position of the crankshaft to the engine block (you did this) and mark the position of a camshaft sprocket tooth to the head or other fixed spot. A belt has to go back on the exact teeth it came off of relative to the two shafts. If the engine uses push rods (I think the 3.0 uses this) to open the valves, then you need not be concerned with timing provided that you did not move the crankshaft from the mark. If you did, then you would possibly be 180 degrees out of time (two turns of the crankshaft = one turn of camshaft). |

actually, regarding the camshafts, they have been removed obviously since the heads are off. they did NOT have any marks on them. i didn't pay too much attention to that fact since i was told as long as #1 piston is in time and ignition is in time, cam position isn't too critical. secondly, the V6 has rocker arm shafts, but i'm pretty sure no pushrods are involved. i could be wrong though. anyway, should i position the "true" piston at TDC or should I leave it the way it is since marks on belt/cover are lined up and distributor is marked??? thanks in advance

Re: Timing Dilemma 93 Shadow
not to sound like a smartass, but are you sure you were looking at #1 cylinder? The cylinders are arranged as so: 1-3-5 on the rear bank and 2-4-6 on the front bank. Also, on the 3.0 V6, the terminals on the distributor are splayed or offset, so make sure your were indeed looking at #1.

Re: Timing Dilemma 93 Shadow
The best advice is to get a Hayes manual which has a section on engine rebuilding in it. It will have the procedure and pictures on how to time the engine.
