Manual override?

Last night on speed they hade the swedish rally and the mexico rally one back to back. While i was watching i noticed at sometimes u could see Petter Soleberg look like manually shift the car but other times they car would just by its self. Then when i noticed his team mates car he didn't even have the padel shift thiny on his steering colum. Also i watched my best motoring vid where he did there cousr and i noticed once again it looked like he was shifting. *i can send u the clip if u want* So does he have manual overide mode?

Please send the video. You may be seeing the hand brake. It looks like a shifter. All the Subaru rally cars have paddle shifters, this I know for a fact.

I can email you the Touge attack one but u can't clearley see him do it but u can clearly see it in the speed coverage. If they all paddle shifters why couldn't u see his teamates. If they all had them shouldn't they be on the steering colum?

They are on the steering column. I think all WRC cars now have semiautomatic sequential gearboxes, and most utilize paddle shifters. Like SabreKhan said, you may have confused it with the handbrake - it's looks quite different in WRC cars from your normal road cars.

As a sidenote, on the Focus WRC the handbrake doubles as the shift lever when the paddle shifter plays up. Great idea as it leaves the driver without a handbrake.

nah i know it wasn't the e-brake cause later in the video u see him reach up and pull the ebrake its where the normal shifter on a car would be Save for it stand up pretty far.

I'm having difficulty understanding your post Dreamspawn, could you please write more clearly? I'll have a go at what I think you're saying.

World Rally Cars do indeed have the option of using the paddle shifter/s or the floor mounted gearchange. To change between them is different for each car. The Peugeot requires the car to be stopped and a linkage to be engaged, a bit costly if needed on stage. Perhaps Petter was having problems and elected to use the floor shifter? As for Atkinson not having the paddle that might be the case as he has not used them on his Group N and may have preferred to do without them. Seems unlikely but possible, might also indicate he is running a lower spec car than Solberg, Subaru are not interested in the manufacturers championship, only the drivers, so maybe Petter gets all the good bits?

Kk i was watching ralley coverage and on the steering colum it looked like petter had padale shifters where as atkins didn't. But i noticed that somtimes the car shifted its self were as others u could see him hit the paddle shifter thing up or down. My ? was does he run the option to over ride the automatic when he wishes to do so. Then my second post was me saying i know it wasn't the ebrake cuase thats in a totally differnt place.

I've noticed the car changes gears by its self but somtimes u can see petter hit the paddle to shift the car by himself. Then i noticed atkins car didn't have it. I was just wanting sombody to confirm that it was a manual overide.

The car never shifts itself. There is no automatic. If he's not using a paddle, then he's using something else. He may have buttons on the steering wheel instead (a-la GT4 wheel). As of 2004, though, all the Impreza WRC cars had paddle shifters as the primary transmission control and a floor-mounted gearshift as the secondary if the paddles malfunctioned. As far as I know, the 2005 layout is the same. New driver may have new interior layout, but I'd need photographic evidence to support that.

Often the motion to hit the paddle is so quick you can't see it unless you're looking right at it, but the car never shifts itself.

I guess he may have had a button cause he both hands on the wheel tilted pretty far bout u could hear the car shift. That answers my ? so thanks to all sorry for all the confusion rough couple days the past few.

You may not have been hearing the car shift. Throttle changes and gear changes in that car sound pretty similar due to the awesome quickness of the revving.
