saturn sl1 transmission problems

i brought a used 2000 saturn sl1 from e bay last month.
everything was fine until 2 days ago when i was driving my son to work and the car wouldnt go past 15 miles per hour.
ok fine i get home and let it sit all nite.
the next day i checked the trans fluid it was empty so i put 3 quarts in and then it ran fine for 1 hour and noticed it was leaking fluid so i was talking to a guy in our local auto parts store and he says it may need a new filter,so i get a new filter and changed it,so now after that it bangs when it is shifting into gears.not sure what to do.
any advice will be appriciated.

Re: saturn sl1 transmission problems

recheck the ATF level(at idle, in park, warmed, engine runing) keep a eye for more leaks

i just hope you didn't damage the transmission.

i rechecked the ATF and it is fine no leaks, the only thing now is that it bangs in first and second gears.and sometimes it idles really high.
not sure what to do,i really dont want to get ripped off from any of these dealers or mechs.
would i have to use the reccomended tranny fluid?
cause i didnt and just wondering if that couldve caused this banging.

I have had a similar problem with my eagle talon (I hate automatics). What I suggest doing is going to be simple and less costly than buying a new tranny. I did this with my car and it lasted much longer.. (transmission fluid was overfilled and the owner waited to long to drain it, so don't overfill the tranny fluid, and after doing this, check the atf when you get gas or something..)

Goto your auto parts store and get a new filter, transmission flush, atf, and lucas transmission fluid (It comes in a white bottle, and I swear buy this stuff, I recommend using it every time you change your fluid).

Drain about a pint out of your tranny fluid and put the transmission flush in. Then, drive the car for 5-8 miles to have the flush go through your system.

Go home, drain the fluid and change the filter. When you're ready to fill it back up with fluid, put the lucas's in first. It's going to take a while because it's really thick though. After that, fill the rest of the transmission up with regular atf. Repost and tell me what that did for you..
