96 SL2 oil pump cover

Hello, anybody know the reason '95 and '96 engines have a differant oil pump cover?

The '95 cover has a small (about .01") diameter hole drilled from the pump output side (pressure side) to the inside of the timing chain cover, while the one I removed ('96) does not.

Any ideas?

Re: 96 SL2 oil pump cover

i think it should be the other way around, the hole was added sometime around 1996. Saturn added the hole so the timing chain would get a constint stream of oil and reduce wear. the hole should be added on any cover that doesn't have it (its 1 MM) or buy a new cover.

That seems like a really good answer. It's obvious it is used to oil the chain, and I couldn't think of any reason for not to be used. Thanks.
