oil filters

Here's an interesting link to a study on oil filters I came accross. I never gave it much thought before and always assumed that the famous orange filter was a good bet, well looks like years ago it was but no any more. Check it out, it's somewhat mopar orientated but the researcher disected all makes and OEM's including GM's Delco.

I wonder if that contributes to the piston slap type noise problem

Yeah, Fram was a quality filter before they changed hands. Notorious now as a cheap underperformer. It amazes me how they could ever think thier penny-pinching cut-corners strategy would be such a good idea in the long run. A lot of info on the web about how lame Frams really are . . . not gossip and urban myths, but comprehensive comparisons based on hard data.

Wix are my filter of choice. They also go under the Carquest Gold brand name.

Greetings Tykrz,

There are several oil filter studies done since 2000. I had done a bunch of study on filters and started using Puralotor product over the last few years. I use Havoline oil (not synthetics) and change every 2500 miles (except break-in period which is at 1,000 miles and at 2,000 miles). The used oil is all collected and and sent back to recycling.

My theory is that the most harmful things about oil is dirt - not breakdown of lubrication. So to me - synthetics or really expensive filters don't make sense - my interest is clean oil - all the time. Puralotors have good fit, tight design, and very acceptable filtering for the scenario I listed above.

Many viewpoints about oil and filters exist - this is just mine.

Does anyone know what type of filters the big "quick-lube" chains use?

Re: oil filters

The quick lube shops use pretty much whatever's cheapest, I've seen mostly fram.

I use Purolators Pure One in my truck now. It's a great filter, I've never had cleaner oil with any other filter. What that study says about possible restriction is not true, at least in my truck. Some of the smaller ones may have restriction, but mine is pretty big, about 7-8 inches high. I'll cut mine open the next time I change my oil (another 300 miles) to see what the element looks like.
