Transmission 02 Montana

I just went to a transmission place to have filter and fluid change. They called me in and showed me the filter that was taken apart which had some flakes of brass shaving in the filter material. He says it is indicating some big problem with transmission. He estimates 1500 to repair it.
Car runs fine and shifts normally without any problem.

Is brass shaving in the filter normal or does it indicate future problem?

Re: Transmission 02 Montana

you could always call another Tranny shop and ask their thoughts on brass in the fluid. Also how do you know they didnt put it in there so they could swipe $1500 from you? If it runs fine then why have someone rebuid it?

Every filter will have some brass particles, especially small ones that is why the filter is there. Try another shop or just have the filter and fluid replaced and wait until something big happens before you replace or rebuild the transmission.

Re: Transmission 02 Montana

Better yet is to avoid transmission servicing altogether. Unless you are doing a lot of heavy hauling or towing, today's transmissions are meant to last the life of the vehicle without service.
