oil consumption,97 sc2 =

hi i know of a 97 sc2 (95k) for sale that uses alot of oil between changes. what is the usual cause of this? also does anything like cat converters ,etc get damaged because of that problem??does it usually get progressivly worse and how soon on the average?? it,s such a cherry car that i really want to buy it even though good sense tells me to steer clear!

Re: oil consumption,97 sc2 =

There is a factory service bulletin out on oil consumption. It states that the oil control rings become stuck and don't work as well as they should. They recomend a procedure of pouring top ebd/ring cleaner down the plug holes and let it soak. Then change the oil using mobile 1 synth at 1000 mile intervals twice afterwards. Never tried it but the 96 sc2 is starting to use a quart every 1600 miles so I will soon.

Re: oil consumption,97 sc2 =

the procedure is on Saturnfans.com, search for "MMO soak" or "internal engine cleaning"

a bad PCV valve may also be at fault, search saturnfans.com for "PCV"

oil problems tend to just make things really dirty and cause carbon build up. the cat is more likey the fail from a bad ECT, again search saturnfans.com for "ECT"
