Question buying an 84fiero 4banger automatic

Im thinking of tradeing in my my town car for an 1984 fiero se with 118000miles on it and im wondering if these are good reliable cars and are they pretty fast?(4 cycinder with automatic trans.) The car looks like its in good condition on the computer but its like 45 minutes away.what are fieros worth in good condition?

IMHO you are looking at the least valuable Fiero out there. The later years, the V6's and the manual trans all add to the value of the vehicle.

Condition means everything. 4 cyl fieros in need of repair are worth about $0.00.

In good condition, anywhere from $500 to $2500, maybe slightly more if it is a truly exceptional medel with lots of options.
The 4 cyl/auto combo is slow. (1/4 mile time in the low 18 sec range)Unless you drive like a little old lady you will likely be looking for more power soon.

The '84 4 cyl version was notorious for being unreliable with cracked, defective engine castings, cooling system and fuel system problems. IMHO some of these problems related to poor servicing procedures, not the actual car itself. So be extreley cautious.

I would suggest to have a mechanic look the car over. Even if you have to pay for an hour of his time, its money well spent. Also consider a V6 model. They were faster, more fun to drive, and somewhat more reliable.

For the love of fieros DO NOT BUY ANY 84, automatic or 4 banger fiero with intentions of keeping it stock. The 84 just plain sucks ass, automatics are the slowest, and the 4 banger has like 70hp. Try and find a 2M6, gt or formula. Try and find a 5 speed 6 cylinder.

Re: Re: buying an 84fiero 4banger automatic

First off, I beleive the HP rating is more like 97HP.

Second, it all depends what you are looking for in a car. The 4-cyl is no race car, for sure, but does have a certain fun-factor, and is cheaper on gas than a V6. I have a 30 mile commute (each way), so gas mileage is important. Having a manual tranny also has definite advantages, to thise who don't mind shifting gears. Of course, it's a pain in heavy traffic.

So, again, it depends on the individual, and what he is looking for.

Besides, a TRUE Fiero lover likes ALL Fieros, right?

That's MY two cents . .

Bob

Re: buying an 84fiero 4banger automatic

seeing as it has 118,000 miles on it looks like it wasnt one of the early 84's with the bad connecting rods. my parts car is an 84 se manual. it has 104,000 miles and it runs and is in decent spape. i got it for $100. yes thats one hundred i didnt forget a 0. i pretty much just bought it just for the headlight motors and to have some spare fenders.

You don't know what you are talking about, the fastest fiero is the 88 formula with the getrag 5 speed. I have raced many auto fieros and they were no better than the imports that try and race me. You can believe what you want but I race and see the results.

Check this out not very impressive for a shot that big http://members.aol.com/shaun41178/Shaun.html

Re: buying an 84fiero 4banger automatic

hell i might be wrong i read it on a site. i thought manuals should be faster. thanks for clearing it up. anyways 85 was the fastest gt's of course with the manual as you stated. heres times for the gt's.
85-7.5 15.7@87
86-7.5 15.9@85
87-7.8 15.9@86
88-7.8 16.0@85
the 85se is right with the formula.
se 4sp 140hp@5200rpm 170ft/lb@3600rpm running 7.4 15.5@90
formula 5sp 135hp4500rpm 165ft/lb3600rpm running 7.4 15.5@89
the highest top speed for the stock fiero was 135mph by the 85gt with the manual
these are pontiacs numbers

ALL fieros are rated the same the only reason they differ from 85 to 88 is because of emissions, so they took the hp rating at a different rpm. Yeah the 88 motor is a little different. My brother in laws STOCK formula 5spd destroys my 86 fastback 4spd. He runs a consistent 15.5.

And If you race you should really get a manual, the autos are stupid slow.
