1989 Buick Century Won't start in the cold
My 1989 Buick Century V6 3.3 will not start when the temperature gets down into the 20's. I've changed the wires & plugs & gas filter, has a new battery & altternator. It turns over yet never kicks in. It seems like it's choked off, for sometimes it'll want to kick in for a few seconds then it just won't start up. When it is warmer, it starts right up & runs with no problems. Someone mentioned a temperature sensor that may be choking it. Another hint may be that, only when I'm experiencing this problem, I can hear the electric hum of a pump in the right rear section of the car that will hum for a few seconds after I turn the key off. Whatever this is doen't make any noise during normal warmer weather operation.

As in Jerpody the correct question is: what is a failing fuel pump. It's located in the gas tank. Get your self an Hays automotive manual (15- 20 dollars at any Autozone) and it will tell you how to test and replace it if nessary. Electric motors that are weak and dying will do that in the cold sometimes. My electric windows will work alot slower in the cold and I have seen others freeze up during the cold. I figure your fuel pump is no diffrent.

Check and clean/replace yor IAC valve. I performs the function of the choke on older cars. If stuck open you will not start in the cold. Good Luck.

the correct answer would be the spark control module try this next time its cold out side and the car wont start take a jug of hot water and pour it around the spark packs i bet ya 10 buck your car starts right up if you have an extension cord try a blow dryer i chsed that damn thing around for months would start if it was pluged in or if it was off for under 3 hours what a pain but that part i im positive thats what is will set you back 200 give or take

Well, public was closest. I chose to go an even cheaper route, replacing the CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) located under the alternator, for about $25. It was a two minute fix & it's working fine now.
