Bad speedometer
My speedometer never worked from the day I bought the car, but a couple of weeks ago it jumped all the way around now the needle is hanging at ~180mp and wont go back to zero.
I need to take off my dash and the covers so I can get to the needle and try to fix it. Problem is I cant get to my panel. Does anyone have a diagram or know of sites that have diagrams that can help me fix my speedo? Also, what can I do to fix my speedo other then buying a new panel? Thanks |

Re: Bad speedometer
I don't have any diagrams, but perhaps you have a short in your speed sensor or it's wiring. It should be around the driveshaft on the tranny and join a wire bundle (i guess) going into your firewall.

Re: Bad speedometer
Does your cruise control work? Are you getting any lights on the dashboard...either check engine lights, a flashing D4 light or a flashing S light?

I havent checked my cruise control, but I get none of the above. Everything looks normal except for my speedo that bounces up and down or just doenst move at all.
BTW I was driving on the highway last night and it jumped up to 100mph then finaly went back to zero. Its not stuck now but still doesnt display the right speed Im going. Anymore thoughts? |

Your speed sensor is not functioning. I am not 100% which one is bad, either the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or the Outputshaft Speed Sensor, but I believe its the Vehicle Speed Sensor and that would make sense. That sensor will make your speedo bounce or operate erratically. Its a simple and inexpensive fix. Its located just below your thermostat housing.

Re: Bad speedometer
Do a search for VSS and you will find plenty of relevant info on how to fix it...don't buy a new one, as teh dealership will charge you hundreds of bucks..just go to a junkyard and get one for $10, or you can look online and find one for around $50. They take about 15 mins to replace....very simple.

Re: Bad speedometer
The speed sensor (pulser) costs about $100 at the dealer. A junk yard sensor does make sense if you can find onel
