Speedometer or Speed Sensor Problems.

I have a Honda Accord 94 coupe. Auto. trans.

When I started my car yesterday after an overnight rain, the speedometer shows 20m/h when I was still parked. I found that it will show 20 if I turned the key to "ON" without even started my car.

Moving my car, found the speedo viberates around 20 regardless of the speed I drive. Problem disappeared after the car is warmed up (1-2 miles), and started again when I restarted my car cold. And it would suddenly appear while I was driving on hightway. The cruise control always worked so I guess the sensor was ok.

Sent my car to a mechanic, paid $55 for diagonosis. I was told he removed the speed sensor and found that it was ok. I also saw him hooked up a computer in my car and did a road test, he said he saw the sensor output to the computer was ok while the speedo was sticking around 20. He suggested I change the whole speedometer cluster. But I don't want to, because I will have to change all the gauges on the panel.

I checked some forums, someone suggested a short in speed sensor wiring. What do you think? And how do I find and clean up the sensor wiring? Thank you.

Re: Speedometer or Speed Sensor Problems.

If it is showing 20 with power off to the instrument cluster, I think you have a speedometer problem. You may have other problems too, but I would start with the speedometer then go from there.

Thankyou Mpumas,
No, it shows 20mph when the car is started or when I turn the key to "ON" before started my car. Sometimes it is ok, some times it would stick to 20 while I was driving on Highway.

Do you think I should replace the speedometer? Seem I have to replace the whole panel cluster since all the gauges are integrated in one cluster.

Re: Speedometer or Speed Sensor Problems.

you can just replace the speedo head. you just have to take the lense off the cluster and then its just 4 screws
