windstar 3.8 transmission

My windstar would not kick into 2nd gear. I took it to a transmission shop. They could not find any codes. They took it apart and replaced some parts in the transmission and it still did not shift into 2nd or 3rd gears. They are now going to put in a completley rebuilt transmission. What if that doen't work? They even put in a new speed sensor. I also had new head gaskets put in about 6,000 mile ago. Any solutions?

Could you shift it manually through the gears (with the column shifter)? This could be just a simple range/mode switch issue. It's a sensor attached to the trans. shift arm that tells the PCM which gear the operator has selected. Try a search.

Re: windstar 3.8 transmission

Thanks Rodeo02,

I just talked to the transmission shop and he said he could only get 1,2and 4. It won't kick into 3rd gear. I will run your idea by him if he can't find a solutuion. His other option is to put in a completeley different transmission. When I first noticed the problem, the transmission would not go into 2nd or 3rd, or it would want to downshift on me. I'm glad I wasn't going sixty when that happeened!

Thanks for you help, Dan
