I have a 1990 Honda Accord EX coupe. Not too long ago, I had the waterpump and the timing belt replaced. It never overheated, just exploded one day. Every since then I get exhaust smoke in the morning when I crank it or whenever I crank it and it has been sitting about 8 hours or so (overnight or at work). I know there is a slight oil leak, I think that the mechanic said it was a camshaft seal or something like that. He fixed everything, but for some reason didn't fix that. Told me when he put it back together. Any ideas on what it might be or, how to fix it? I would like to keep this car, but if it's something that might be major, I will cut my losses and sell it now. Oh, it has about 135,000 miles.

Re: 90 Accord EX complete with exhaust smoke
Exploded one day??? What does that mean ??? Blue smoke from the exhaust has nothing to do with camshaft seals. You may have a valve seal problem or ring problem. You may have a clogged PCV valve (located on top of the valve cover). 135K is early for an engine problem like this unless you have not paid attention to oil changes. Need to do a compression check.

I was leaving a dr appt one day and i happen to look in my mirror and i see a trail down the road and it was anti-freeze. Two second later the timing belt broke, but it never overheated once. I didn't know there was a problem with it.
After I got it fixed is when the problem started. I am new in town and I dont know much about it, so I took it to a "major" shop around here and I must say that it was the biggest mistake. The qouted me 450 and when I picked it up they tried to jack it up to 705, not to mention that when I got it home it was leaking anti-freeze. I hesitated to take it back to them, but i just gave them 450. They "fixed" it and it doesn't leak anymore, it just smokes. How could the PCV valve help. I figure that I will start there, since that is probably the cheapest place to start. |

Re: 90 Accord EX complete with exhaust smoke
Is the smoke white, blue, or black?
You said you get smoke when you crank it...does this continue when you drive it??? Are you sure you're not confusing a bit of condensation evaporating in the morning for smoke?

It's blue smoke. When I crank it, it last for roughly 20-30 seconds and then it will stop. It's definitely smoke, no doubt about that. It doesn't smoke any when I drive though. Just when I crank it.
I used to have a royal blue 92 Eclpise when I turned 16 and it smoked like crazy. It was nicknamed around town as "The Blue Smoke" |

Re: 90 Accord EX complete with exhaust smoke
A clogged PVC valve will pressurize the crankcase and could cause oil at the top of the valves to be forcred into the intake manifold which could account for the blue smoke. It is a cheap place to start.
