AC problem? Or something else...
Ok here's the symptoms, let's see if anyone out there can help me out:
1) Car overheats when AC is on and weather is hot. 2) AC blows barely cooled air. 3) AC worked for over a year but slowly got warmer and warmer the whole time. Here are things I've checked: 1) Plenty of free-on (even though I can't spell it )2) Fan for high pressure side is working properly 3) Doesn't appear to be any blockage to air flow to external radiator 4) Fan for low pressure side appears to be working fine Oh and one more question. is there any way to get the musty smell out of your vents? It smells the worst when AC is on. |

You may have a freon (R134-A) leak that is slow. As for your overheating, if the fans are running then chances are you may need a new thermostat. They are $8 from Autozone or $12 from the dealer. I replace mine about every 2 years. Also check your diagnostic codes to make sure you dont have a bad coolant temperature sensor.
Get instructions for codes here: http://www.neons.org/neontsb/diagnost.htm If you replace your t-stat, make sure to get a new radiator cap too. |

Thanks for your reply Katwoman, but I should have done more trouble shooting before I posted
. I checked the fans last night and neither of my radiator fans are running at all . I also checked my AC system pressure and it was almost too full. When I blow air over the radiator, the AC works fine. The problem is just that the fans aren't working, and the AC radiator is right smack dab behindt he engine radiator..I took it in to the shop just now, after diagnosing it properly for several hours last night. I ruled out the fuse and the relay, but I couldn't reach in and get a good node on the power going into the fan to bypass the power and run it straight from the battery. I could however get a good test on the wire going to the fan and it was receiving no power whatsoever when the AC was turned on. The relay going to the Rad fan WAS getting power though, so the problem seems to be between the relay and the fan. I suspect the small power splitter box on the fans is bad because I have power on one end, and no power on the other. I suppose there could be a grounding problem or maybe the wire itself is bad...I'll find out soon enough. Anyways, thanks again! And could you tell me why I need a new radiator cap if I change my coolant temperature thermostat? I didn't know you needed to do that and it sounds like there is a reason that I'm missing

I don't know the EXACT reason why, but I do it as a precaution just because like any car part, it only lasts so long. With the radiator being a part that generates alot of heat, my guess is integrity of certain parts is compromised because of that. Most "experts" over on the Neon.org forums will always tell people to replace their caps along with their t-stats. Theres a good number of people who know what they are doing. I will go do some searching and see if I can get an answer for the exact reason.
As for your fans not working, if you have already ruled out the relay and fuse, my guess would be you may need a new fan motor. I had to replace mine after 96K miles. I also just replaced my fan relay about 2 months ago, original one at 153,000 miles. |

It's going to be on the inside of the driver's side fender. kinda behind where the battery box is. It has a kind of odd shape to it....too bad I didn't pix of my old one when I replaced it. It is also a dealer-only part and will run you about $70 or so.
