Which type of resonator do I need to remove raspy exhaust sound?
I'm running a custom exhaust set up, all the way from the cat-back on my 2001 Acura Integra GS. When I upgraded the pipe from 2" to 2.25", I didn't install a resonator. Now I have this raspy sound everytime I get above a certain RPM, especially under great acceleration. Now I think installing a resonator would eliminate the raspy sound, but what kind do I get? The straight-thru, perforated core resonators or the ones with louvres and chambers? I really want to keep the free-flowing performance the way it is. I really want to get rid of that nasty rasp sound. Can anyone help me with this problem??

Re: Which type of resonator do I need to remove raspy exhaust sound?
on my B18B, I ran 2.25" from manifold back, to a 3 chamber flowmaster. and I had that nasty 2 stroke rap like a dirt bike, nothing like a real dirt bike but I was getting there, I had a 18" pack put in as a resonator, they basically are straight through, so your flow isnt hurt much, and it quieted mine down and made it sound alot smoother and never had that rasp to it anymore. id just get a glasspack installed in the body pipe behind the shift linkage. they are cheap, quiet it down and I didnt notice a difference in the performance at all.
its weird because the kid that owns the muffler shop was telling me my car was weird because usually whenever a kid comes in there they have to remove the resonator to gewt the sound they want, and I had to install one. they probably all had cats though(mine was hollow).

Thanks Guys
Thanks guys for the help. You guys are awesome.
But one more thing before I go and install a glasspack... I have a deep rumble tone which is somewhat loud, not enough to attract cops, but loud enough to set off car alarms when I pass by. How much tone reduction am I looking at if I used the glasspack? I'm definitely expecting some amount of reduction in exhaust note, but would it still have that nice deep rumble? I've asked a couple professionals from perforance exhaust shops, and they say that it'll "definitely take off the edge". I love the performance and sound right now without the resonator, but its that damn raspy sound coming out...

Re: Which type of resonator do I need to remove raspy exhaust sound?
mine was pretty deep, and never got real loud unless I hossed it, you could tell at freeway speeds I had exhaust for sure, but never came out sounding bad.
but the muffler is most of the deal. I have right now same size pipe, pretty much same deal of a pack but its a 18" glasspack against a 24" steel packed smitty like it was on the B18,. but I have a B17 right now wiht the rear section of a greddy exhaust after the pipe/pack and it is nice and mellow, has a real cool tone when just cruising around, freeway its silent, but open it up and it roars. I dont have as large of a pack but my exhaust is way mellower. so not sure how much a pack will affect the low rumble, my old setup was alot deeper than mine now.worst case while your there, you should have them cut out a section of the body pipe, tack in the pack, and rev it, if you dont like it have them weld in new steel to replace the lost section, or a shorter length peice/short pack, youll probably have to pay for all peices you try but they arent that expensive. Im lucky, my buddy owns a muffler shop so I can try out used shit and see what sounds sick then buy new, so I only pay for what I want, and if theres a nice used one its even cheaper.

Re: Which type of resonator do I need to remove raspy exhaust sound?
no, my exhaust on my GSR right now cost me 80 bucks and it is nice and mellow when accelerating normally, silent when cruising steady and SCREAMS when I open it up.

Yeah, I agree with 94tegRS. My exhaust is all custom and barely costs at the most $140 with everything on it now. After installing a $20 resonator, I got rid of that nasty raspy sound, and it doesn't drone on the highway anymore. When I drive under normal conditions, it has a nice, deep, mellow tone that we have all grown to love. On the highway, its nice and not too loud, like a near-quiet hum, and when I open the throttle up, its loud as hell, now with no ass-nasty raspy sound after I just installed the resonator.
They way I see it, I think one of the reasons why most custom exhausts out there have that rasp is because of the lack of a resonator. Almost all the aftermarket performance cat-backs out there have one. |

Re: Which type of resonator do I need to remove raspy exhaust sound?
with my deal I bet noone will touch the price I can get on exhausts, but still on my civic I had a cheap aerospeed or brosal or some cheesy muffler that I had custom piping with a smitty as a resonator and it sounds good.
