Re: crazy sound when its cold out

it'd be nice if you worded that alittle better but I think i get what you are saying. Either way the motor is running cold so you have a chance to damage something or mainly cause cylinder wear, which is why you want to get the motor up to temp as soon as possible instead of letting it run cold for 10 mins until its warm.

When does an engine recieve the most damage? When its cold. Allowing your car to idle for a period of time to allow it to warm up is going to cause your motor to have premature cylinder wall wear. Also, when your car is cold and running you have moisture in your engine, in turn the moisture finds its way to your oil, which then causes your oil to "sludge".

Its best to start your car up, let it idle a few seconds to get the oil flowing, and then to drive it normally to get it up to temp as quickly as possible.

Go ahead and say "what about my oil, its cold and its not flowing". Well if you have the proper oil in your car that is rated for cold weather (ex. 5w30) it wont have a problem, its rated for cold weather and is extra thin. And your oil is flowing instantly when you start your car, you already have oil in the filter that is ready to lube up your bearings and cyliders and head, if it wasn't flowing right away you'd throw your bearings out every time you start your car.

And now you want me to state where I get my information from? OK. I'm a student at UTI, pretty much the best auto school in america right now. And right now I'm in my basic engines course, and we are learning all about the lubrication system right now. Yes, even I was amazed when I heard this statement, but after my teacher explained it, it all made sence.
This sounds right to me, but who drives normally after starting their car? Seems like everybody's in a hurry these days...
BTW, is it hurting my car that the fan stays on all the time? I always try to let my car warm up. I've been using 10w40 but I live in the south where it's not nearly as cold.

Who enjoys hopping in and driving their car in the morning after a -40 night? It's not necessarily just the engine that concerns me, although it is obviously important. It's just far more comfortable to warm up the inside of your car so that everything loosens up and the seats arent rock solid.

It can't be all that bad to let your car idle to warm up the inside as well as the engine and oil. Just turning the key and driving away isn't always practical. (however it tends to be forced when you're in a hurry)

You're never supposed to do what you just said. Read an owners manual. Most say, warm up for at least 60-90 seconds before driving.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

yeah having your fan running at all times is bad. Makes your motor run at a cooler temperature.

Heres another lesson for you guys:

Most people think the W in 10w40 or anything other mixture, stands for weight, well thats wrong. It stands for winter.

Say you have sae 40 and sae 10w40. Sae 40 will flow at a rate of 40 at all time, which is bad in the winter. now 10w40 when its cold, will flow at a rate of 10 to help it get moving when its cold, and once its warm it will florw at 40 to protect your engine.

just alittle fyi.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

alright two things. i understand wut u'r saying about the idle. yes it's bad to idle a car for extended periods of time. however i think u'r moisture point falls short in this instance. at -30 there is no moisture in the air. water freezes at 32F.

yes there is oil in the filter before start up, but there isn't any pressure yet so how do u not spin bearings?

where is the first place oil goes after it gets pushed out of the oil pump?

next thing, u'r prolly gonna get crap about the W in 5W30. i tried explaining it before and no one wanted to believe me at first.

anyone hear of Stark State's automotive program?

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

you get pressure within seconds of start up, that why I said to let it run for about 30 seconds or so before moving. And yeah I know about it freezing, but while the engine is cooling there is moisture there and then its still on the inside and once it starts and fires its gonna be moving around. And even if there was still no moisture you still get the most wear running at cold temperatures.

And if people want to fight me on the W they can go look it up and find out for themselves.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

I've been running my fan all the time for 2 years now and I don't think I'm going to worry much about it. Car runs better after warmed up good.

montreal civic

hey whats up? cold weather i live it in montreal...ne ways its normal well i dont think its ne thing dagerous mine does that when its like -30 and colder,, mine sounds like it comes from the speedometer cable, my dads 91 4runner does the same thing...i dont think its the power steering cuz i have none... dont forget its still an old ass car
91 dx hb/ si conversion int.
315 000 org engin and tranny and doesnt burn oil...

sug...let ur car warm up, espacially in that intence cold, i dont care what ne one says but at -30 oil doesnt lubricate well, obviously if u let the car idle for 10 + min its not good....but id say at least 5..... me personally i let it run a 15 min cycle with my started, the car just sounds like its gonna die when i give it less then 5 min in that weather..im not challenging ne one..lol but obviously if u let it idle for long periods of time ur oil gets mixted with some fuel due to worn valves and piston rings etc.... but just change ur oil evry 4000 km istead of 5000 and ull increas the life of ur motor.... late r

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

As far as the squeaking my alternator bearing was going bad and when it was cold it would sqeak and squeal like crazy but got better as the motor warmed up if it does it intermiten, its b/c there is a voltage regulator that tells your alternator when to charge the battery so it kicks on and off and it could be the bearing that spins when the alt. is enguaged.

Re: crazy sound when its cold out

well your engine WILL run when you start the car at idle speed, and at that point things are moving anyway - so why not go and get it warmed up quicker than let it run cold longer - if that makes sense lol
