Virginia Traffic Laws...

Hello All!!

I live in Canada but at the end of April I am leaving to work in Virginia for 4 months. I am just wondering what kinds of things I should watch out for or if there are any weird laws that they enforce often. I heard that tire squeeling is considered Wreckless Driving? things like that. As well, does anyone know how tickets that I get in the US will affect my insurance in Canada? what are the regular prices of tickets, are speeding tickets calculated per mph over, or are there ranges? As much info as possible would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Alex

Re: Virginia Traffic Laws...

The main thing to remember about Virginia is that 20mph over the speed limit or over 80 mph is an automatic reckless violation which comes with a hefty fine.

As far as I know they do not report back to Canada. CA and NY are the only two that I am sure of but there may be more.

Re: Virginia Traffic Laws...

A dumb piece of advice: Watch the mph on the speedometer not the km/h, or else you might back-up traffic, and some states can give you tickets for that reason...

Just use common sense, and get a 'feel' for your local cops...every area is different and every cop is different, so just use common sense and your best judgement to see what flies and what doesn't.

As far as what tickets will carry over to your insurance, you should talk to your VA and Canadian DMVs and find out.

Re: Virginia Traffic Laws...

VA has some pretty tough/ annoying laws:

Your car must have a front licensce plate, Tint has to be above 35% on the windows (I got busted for that), 20 above the speedlimit is reckless, as is going 80 anywhere.

Just drive safe, and smart- they'll leave you alone. The second you put others in danger they'll nab you.

Re: Virginia Traffic Laws...

yeah and if you squeel wheels you are going to get a wreckless, they give em out al the time. If you decide to speed keep your eyes wide open and on the highway dont speed under bridges, they sit ontop and take radar were you cant see them. and under cover cops are all over the place, i had one in a ricer 02 si try to race me(I knew he was a cop cause he gave my friend a ticket). But to make a long story short i wouldnt speed.
