Crank Pulley Bolt Stuck!
1st post, help me out here..please, I'm beggin' ya!!! I was trying to do the cam belt on my 2.3litre Ranger, but the front Crank Pulley(Harmonic Balancer to some)Bolt wouldn't budge. Used a hi-torque 1/2 impact turning ccw, then a 3ft breaker bar, no go! It's not L/H thread is it? I then tried cw and still no go. Before I use even more force, I need to know removal direction..ccw or cw??? Also is there an alternate way to remove the cam belt, like unbolting the front pan section that is blocking the belt from coming out past it's flange pulley? Any help appreciated...

Put a breaker bar on the bolt, rest the bar against the frame & just BUMP the starter. That should back the bolt right out for you. Just be REAL careful with this method. Works like a charm!

yeah, I've heard of that before...I'm kinda skeerd to do such a brutal thing. Have you ever used this technique yourself? Maybe a 3/4" impact...so you're saying bolt should spin off opposite normal crank rotation?

Yes the bolt spins off the opposite way the crank pulley rotates. I have not used this method first hand, but lots of people have on other boards I hang out at. You can pull the fuel pump fuse/relay or coil wire if you are concerned with the engine starting up. Another way to attack it is with a STRONG air impact gun. You may need to clear stuff out of the way to fit one in there thought.

Well, got it done!!! Had to give the impact wrench a tune-up to get max torque, it finally spun off that damn crank bolt...thought it was gonna twist off, before it finally spun out. The rest was a piece-o-cake...belt still looked great, but the tensioner was sounding a little dry/noisy, so I'm glad I got it done when I did. 120k is a little too long to let such a major engine component go...till next time...carry on...
