I totally disagree with that. I use my TT-01 to grip, and its fast/durable. You must have had a Bone stock TT-01 with minor upgrades. If you put a little money into it, adjust a few things, You'll get your bang for its buk. I dont see why you would spend 300 on almost same quality stuff. Come on, its made my tamiya! I recomend the TT-01 with a few alloy upgrades.

HI Feint Motion. I noted the words "put a little money on it","minor upgrades". I bought this kit recently to get the body and the forward reverse esc. I have to say that the tt-01 handles well but again its not really durable. The suspension is sloppy and the steering is inconsistent and wobbly. Investing alloy parts for it (which is a lot) to make it competetive is like spending money on a tl01. It will race but it wont be a contender against other racing kits like the ta04 or tb02 in the tamiya lineup. A tb02 is basically a toned down version of a tbevo3. If you're willing to spend money on a tt01 or even a tl01, its better to spend it on a kit that's really designed for non beginners. I'd go straight to a tamiya's racing kits(tao4,tbo2), yokomo,ae,losi kit coz it will cost the same in the end.
