front diff?

i have a 95 jimmy/blazer with 4X4. i wanted to know if the front if auto locking or standard open. i know the rear is a open diff but if a spin in reverse and stop and try it agin both wheels will lock and either pull me out or spin. is this normal? in the front is it locking or not? it doesn't look like a standard front diff.

Re: front diff?

The front differential is open. If it was posi, under power,it would only want to go straight.

Re: front diff?

it would be harder to turn but posi isn't the same as auto locking. auto locking locks in if the wheel slips and when you come to a stop it puts its self in and acts like a posi then. and as soon as your down the road and the fronts spining the same as the rear it slides out and goes back to a open diff. GM sevice tech told me thats how it works. how can you feel much diff in it. if i lock it in to 4X4 its harder to turn the steering wheel. but thats all 4X4's. i know if i try to do it on dry pavment it will drag the front wheels as i'm backing up. can you tell by looking at it or vin #. i know they could have came with one

Re: front diff?

I've had these apart, the carrier in them are similar to the rear open end differential. The front axle is not automatic. When the transfer case is in 4WD, the right front axle gets locked into the differential. When shifted out of 4WD, the axle is released.
There was a full time all wheel drive option. The only difference with that front axle, is that it is always engaged. There is no mention of any other front differential in the 95 shop manual.

Re: front diff?

i'll try to take a pic of where it says it could have come with locking diffs. if i can't i'll type it word for word. its in the manual where the first one they list is a standard diff and right below it they have auto locking diff. so if they have it in the manual it must have been something you could have ordered. why do you say it was similar but not the same? was there a extra part to it?

Re: front diff?

ok i got out the owners manual and this is what it says word for word....."LOCKING REAR AXLE,
If you have this feature, your rear axle can give you additional traction on snow,mud,ice,sand and gravel. It works like a standard axle most of the time, but when one of the rear wheels has no traction and the other does, the locking feature will allow the weel with traction to move the vehicle" i found it on page 2-24. if you have a 95 then you might want to look it up.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought you were asking about the front differential, not the LOCKING REAR AXLE. The information that I gave you is strictly about the front.

Re: front diff?

it was about the front but if they had it in one they could have had it in another. so how do you tell if you have a locking rear axle?

Re: front diff?

Rear Posi Traction RPO code = G80 on your option label. Or check yourself. Jack up the rear axle, trans in neutral and turn one wheel quickly. The opposite side will turn in the same direction with posi.

Re: front diff?

GU5 = 3.23 gear ratio
GU6 = 3.42 rear ratio
