98 rodeo needs help. will not start.

the rodeo died on my wife while slowing down at a stop light and has not started since.
when trying to start it, it seemed as though it would almost start while cranking and then just stop dead when stop cranking. small kickback
It seems to be getting fuel and spark.
Pulled the timing belt off, the crank and one cam were aligned perfectly and the other cam was off by 2 teeth. Realigned the the timing marks and replaced the timing belt and fuel filter, and still having the same problem, except the kickback seems stronger.
Since then the plugs have been changed to ensure that the plugs are not wet. Still having the same problem.

Please help!!!! any help will be appreciated.

Is your check engine light lit? What codes are you getting? I'd definately scan for codes before I tore into the front of the engine again. That's alot of work if you are not certain.
G/luck

the only code that showed up was egr= insuffiecient flow. and it showed up twice.
it showed up before it died and then it was the only code that showed up after it died.

The plugs should be wet if the engine is turning over & not firing up. I'd check for a fuel delivery concern first. Fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator. Then go to the crank and/or cam position sensor as these set your fuel injection & ignition timing. You *should* be getting a code if one of those is malfunctioning. Also sounds like the EGR outlet tube is plugged behind the throttle plate, but that's a minor detail. Gotta get it to run first.

I am having a very similiar problem with a 1994 rodeo. It tried to die at an intersection, I barely made it home. Then since it will not start and occasionally backfires. It did start one time but ran very rough. Also it seemed like it was getting to much gas but pressure and injectors seem fine. I also was thinking about changing the crank position sensor as mechanically i have tried everyhting and had all systems checked by mechanic. I was wondering if this sensor was the problem. I did what autozone recommended and checked the resistance where it connects to the ignition coils and it was 860 ohms. They say it should be between 900-1200, since this is such a small difference i dont know.
'Any help would be greatly appreciated
Also if you have already replaced your sensor, did it work.

Re: 98 rodeo needs help. will not start.

I had similar probs--clean the EGR or replace it if you can afford the part. That should do it.

Having the same problem here with my 95 rodeo 3.2 engine. Replaced timing belt and crank position sensor. Its getting fuel.. I cleaned the egr valve and when i try to start it, it tries to start but acts as if its out of time.. Before it died on me, it would have a no start problem, and sometimes it would start ....i have spark but it is weak what could it be

try checking the oil to see if there is fuel in with it. there seems to be on mine. no idea wher it is coming from but the oil is definitely thinned out and smells like fuel.
the only other thing i hae since changed on mine is the ignition module under the coils. it runs better but is still getting to much fuel, and the engine shakes a lot while idling, any of this sound like yours?
