Smog Legal GSR...Technically

I have a 95 GSR with 70k on it and I don't really know how to get more power besides your typical intake and exhaust. Well I mean I KNOW how to ge the power, I just don't know how I wanna do it. Either way Iwant to do it legally, like passing smog and having CARB approved numbers and what not.

Well one choice is the Greddy GSR Turbo kit I found With intercooler for 2700. Problem is I don't know if it will still be carb exempt with the intercooler. Another thing is that Mine is a 95 and the kits are supposedly only for 96-99, something about different wiring or something. How hard is that to work around, and how would I go about it?

Next choice is http://city-speed.com/webstore/eng_IntTypeRhead.html

it is a JDM type R cylinder Head set, complete with:
JDM Bare Type R Cylinder Head w/ Cam Caps & Cam Rails
JDM Civic Type R Intake & Exhaust Camshafts
JDM VTEC Solenoid
Type R Lost Motion Assemblies
Type R Rocker Arms, Misc Bolts, Seals Etc
Type R Yellow Intake Inner & Outer Valve Springs & Retainers
Type R Blue Exhaust Inner & Outer Valve Springs & Retainers
Type R Lightweight Valves w/ Keepers
Type R Red Valve Cover
Anyway, if I were to go this way I would also get the Type R LSD. I know since this thing is JDM it isn't smog legal, but the owner told me that since it is just the actual honda heads, there would really be no way to tell the difference when you pop the hood so technically it would pass smog.

Which way would you guys go, boosted with intercooler and hope it passes, or NA with type R heads and internals and LSD. Which would be a better autocross car with a better powerband and more pull to launch out of turns and what not. Thank you for any input.

Re: Smog Legal GSR...Technically

I know that a 1995 GSR has an OBD I, and the 96 and up have OBD II. That could be a difference. To answer the question, I personally would like a car that has a wonderful powerband. I can't stand peaky powerbands, or dropoffs. I think that there is more reliability in n/a, but I'm not sure for what you are doing with that type R head. It looks like it would be reliable, but if this is not your daily driver or anything, then you don't have to worry about it eh? Anyway, I'd prefer the autocross, type R head setup, <--- my 2 cents.

Re: Smog Legal GSR...Technically

im going to say, go with the greddy kit. it will save you money and get you more power. i might be wrong but i dont think the kit is legal with an intercooler and it will only pass smog at 7psi (pretty sure). if you decide to go the FI route, get a better type of fuel management than that blue box that comes with the GReddy kit. go with something like hondata or uberdata.

Re: Smog Legal GSR...Technically

Thanks for the input guys. If I were to go NA Iwould probably get a higher life cam set up and ligten up some pullys and cam gears, maybe a CARB legal intake manifold.

You see I am going to be using this car as a half daily driver half mild track car. Which set up would give me the best peformance that I can use on a circuit course. I am either going to boost on the GSR heads on it now or NA if I swap in those type R heads. Supposedly these heads have a stock port and polish which is nice, and it says that it'll probably give another 10-15 hp to the rear wheels, I know that isn't much, and it probably might not even give that to me, but I was wondering if it would be more efficient on a track than greddys turbo set up that I heard is sort of weak. Anyways, yeah thanks for the input.
