Extremely expensive transmission?

Ok so my transmission recently screwed up, I would shift into drive, and I would rev really high, and hardly move at all, my reverse and low range gears both worked, but neither drive works. Took it into the tranny shop, they say it will cost $2667 plus tax to fix, is this not a bit farfetched??? The car itself only cost 2300. Anyone know a cheap way to fix this problem, any suggestions are welcome, because a 16 year old still in school cant pay that off :|

Re: Extremely expensive transmission?

You could get a used one if you know someone who can replace it for you. It's the labor charge that jacks up the price.

Re: Extremely expensive transmission?

My husband just replaced the tranny in his 1997.Total was $2876.00 of which $405.00 of the cost was labor and the tranny itself was $2300.00.What I meant was that you could probably get a used one from a junkyard cheaper. He had a mechanic replace his.

Re: Extremely expensive transmission?

We just bought a guarenteed engine for $400 with $100 core value from a junk yard. The tranni couldn't cost much more then that. And a back yard mechanic could do the job (swap) in 4 hours. That's about $200 labor. So you could get it done for around $500. IF you spend the time to check your local resources. Many mechnics are sensitive to the plight of a 16yo and wouldn't try to gouge them like the guy you've talked to.

Re: Extremely expensive transmission?

I think I will probably try and find a backyard mech, or a guy at works family owns an auto shop, but there is no way in hell I will pay 3000 dollars, the car only cost 2300, sure its worth 3500, but 3000 is TOO MUCH

i second that motion. i bought a used tranny, one of many in stock, from an online junkyard. with shipping, paid just over 200 for it. 60 day warranty.

shop charged me 300 to put it in, at 70$/hr (would have loved to do it myself, but was about 3000 miles from home..). only took a few hours, im led to believe.

i tried finding a backyard/mobile mechanic to put it in, or help me put it in, but no one would do FWD transmission swaps. your mileage may vary.
