checked the fuses....

and they are all good...but the fuel guage and the temp dont work...before i tear into the dash, i am sure there is a common point for them somewhere else (dont have manual yet, supposed to get one from friend at work)...anyone know where that is??? also, i understand there are 3 temp sensors (have a/c), which one feeds the guage? or does it get info from computer?

anyways, thanks all.

The problems you are having with your fuel guage and temperature indicator matches exactly a problem I had with one of my Metros last month. The problem was caused by a rusted negative battery cable connection where the battery cable ties onto the tranny. With this connection not returning ground, the car found alternate ground returns through the chassis. This caused a printed circuit board track to melt on the Instrument Panel Cluster. To repair the guages I had to pull the instrument Panel Cluster from the dash and did a visual inspection. The burned track was obvous and I repaired it with a small loop of 18 guage wire soldered around the burned up track.

As a side note to this problem, the clutch cable also became a major ground return back to the engine when the starter was engaged. It got so hot when I used the starter that it melted the plastic sleeve that routes it through the firewall!!! Needless to say, I was not amused by my grounding problem.

I hope this helps. Removing the Instrument Panel Cluster can be tricky. Let us know how it goes.

hey thanks for that...that would make sense as the battery was quite dead when i got it and had to jump a couple of times...and the battery cables were loose at the time...so it might have done the same thing.

i wont be able to pull the dash until the weekend...but damn, i will totally curious until then!!! might not be able to wait!!

Thanks for the info, and i will let ya know what i find...
